My friend Balckwell and I’ve been emailing each other back and forth for over two years at this point in an email chain with the subject “Re: Hello. I was reading your website just now.” A few months ago, Balckwell had the idea of writing a few “epistolary essays.” Instead of writing our essays alone in the darkness of night like we (or I) normally do, we’d instead write our essays as emails, responding to each other. Our first “season” of epistolary essays lasted four rounds, starting with Balckwell and ending with me. We discussed a topic that had come up quite frequently in our emails to each other: influence.
